After their second consecutive win at the Davis Double Century, Breeze and Guy made their first attempt at breaking the world record in 1976. Their budget consisted only of $3,000 (from their own savings) and so the support crew was made up of volunteers and they borrowed a van and a number of spare parts from the Cove Bike Shop in Tiburon.

They left San Francisco, CA, on June 22 and made it 260 miles to Reno, NV, in 16 hours.

By the sixth day, they were almost a day ahead of schedule. However, due to a frame that was too short for Breeze to comfortably ride under certain conditions, he developed knee problems that forced the end of the trip in Lincoln, NE.
