Wende Cragg on participating

"...So the night before we were riding our bikes through town, just cruising through and there were, for some reason Crested Butte always attracted a bunch of Texans. These Texas dudes saw me on my bike and they yelled over, you’re not going to ride that tomorrow. You want to rent that bike over to us so we can ride? And Charlie and Gary and those guys are saying, “She’s riding man.” So they made some kinda bet that I wasn’t going to make it. But sure enough, I did. I was the only woman. There was one other woman that made it to the base camp and she said, this is as far as I go, but I think that first Crested Butte trip I think there were, I want to say there were 13 of us that made it to the top and then back down the other side to Aspen."

Joe Breeze on foot retention

"... for years we rode [Pearl Pass] without any foot retention. Before ski bindings came along, we had toe clips and straps, right. It was totally Cunningham who was the first one to have those on Pearl Pass. And when I saw him riding that, I said, I get it, ... Yeah, your feet aren’t going to fly off the pedals when they have that opportunity, you are holding them on there. ... That year I first put toe straps on my bike for Pearl was the only one I didn’t, all the earlier ones I said, I am never going to do this again."

Charlie Kelly on the experience

"It’s like putting your handlebars on a paint shaker and holding on for 20 minutes. ... But the thing is you’re riding 8 or 9 miles over rocks that go from cantaloupes to bathtubs, you know? ... Really steep hill. It really really pounds you."
